Birdwatching and nature experiences
Saimaanvalo Oy is located by Pihlajavesi. This offers great opportunities to enjoy Saimaa's many opportunities, fishing, boating, kayaking, bird watching, swimming and, of course, Saimaa Ringed Seal!
We offer multi-level birding courses and trips to Saimaa and its surroundings. We have a boat with which we can navigate to different parts of Saimaa, look for osprey nests or Saimaa Ringed Seals on rocks.
We have observed 92 different species of birds just by the calls of Saimaanvalo, an amazing number! I can also introduce you to the sound world of birds, so you can more fully observe birds with your ears as well! We quite often forget to observe this aspect completely, although many species such as Eurasian Bittern, golden oriole, or winter wren can be difficult to see, but so easy to hear! Similarly, it is difficult to distinguish a willow warbler, a wood warbler, and a common chiffchaff based on visual perception, but they all sing in remarkably different ways.
We use high-quality Meopta and Swarovski bird telescopes and binoculars.
We can go on excursions in the surrounding countries, on the nearby islands, explore the beaches either by paddling with an Inca canoe or a Buster. We can also make longer trips further to Saimaa by motorboat.
There are also many different species of mammals living nearby. Foxes, different hares are common guests, as well as small mammals such as weasels, Eurasian moles, and forest voles. The darkening autumn evenings call bats, such as Daubenton's bats, whiskered bats and Northern bats s from their hiding places, and we have often seen Saimaa Ringed seals wondering about our activities in the nearby waters.
